Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act a case study of block Nalagarh Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) 2005 is a landmark legislation in Indian history of social security legislation after independence. The study highlights the interest of the respondents in this employment Scheme according to their income or other economic or social conditions. The study explains that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is a universal scheme. It does not discriminate between the rural households in terms of land, caste and occupation. Nevertheless, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, lower Other Backward Castes and Muslims who are generally landless and causal labourers in agriculture self-select themselves in larger proportion for wage employment in government-sponsored schemes. It can be said that NREGA has played a significant role for the rural poor. A positive impact of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) on rural employment can be seen as NREGA has left a deep impact on rural people because they are receiving employment under the scheme in their domestic area. newline
