Abstract
Currently the world consumes an average of 13 terra watts TW of
newlineelectric power by the year 2050 this amount is likely to be 30 TW If this
newlinepower is obtained from fossil fuels the concentration of CO2 liberated will be
newlinedouble that of the present level causing substantial global warming along
newlinewith many other undesirable consequences The present scenario is in urgent
newlineneed of an efficient means of harvesting energy and it should be used in all
newlineappliances and places Photovoltaic power generation is one of the best suited
newlinemethods and it has several advantages notably that it does not produce any
newlineharmful pollutants since the sun deposits 1 20 000 TW of radiation on the
newlineearth At present more than 95 of crystalline Silicon solar cells are in use
newlinebut the cell efficiency is less and the cost is high In order for solar cells to
newlinebecome more widely adopted it is necessary to either bring down its cost or
newlineincrease its efficiency through use of new designs For environmental
newlinemonitoring military security and process control Infra red sensors are mostly
newlineused for the conversion of direct or reflected infra red radiation into electrical
newlinesignals to collect necessary details A through understanding of deposition
