Evaluation of cowpea vigna unguiculata l walp genotypes under rainfed conditions of chitrakoot

Abstract

Abstract newlineResearcher: Navin Kumar Supervisor: Dr.S.S . Singh newlineThe present investigation entitled Evaluation of Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata newline(L.) Walp.] Genotypes under Rainfed Conditions of Chitrakoot was carried out with newlinethe objective to collect the basic information on the genetic variability ,stability and newlineseed quality parameter. The experiment was laid out with 15 cowpea genotypes under newlinerandomized block design with three replications at the Field Experimentation Centre newlineof the Department of crop sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, M.G.C.G.V Chitrakoot newlineduring Kharif 2016-17 and 2017-2018. The observations were recorded on twenty newlinequantitative characters along with some biochemical and seed quality parameters. newlineHigh heritability with high genetic advance was recorded for plant height followed by newlinepeduncle length, biological yield per plant, pod/plant, pod length, seed yield per plant, newlinedays to maturity, days to 50% heading, days to 50 % flowering, seeds /pod, seed newlineindex, no. of main branches, terminal leaf length, terminal leaf width, cluster/plant newlineand fresh pod weight. It was observed that the magnitude of association varied among newlinethe genotypes. The traits likes biological yield per plants, pod per plant, terminal leaf newlinewidth, seeds per pod, cluster per plant, and number of main branches, seed index and newlineterminal leaf length showed the positive and significant correlation with seed yield per newlineplant at genotypic and phenotypic level, character having high heritability and high newlinecorrelation with the former trait is choose to make selection more effective. Yield newlinecontributing traits viz., Number of pods per cluster Number of cluster per plants newlineNumber of pods per plant Number of seeds per pod are responsible for development newlineof high yielding lines. The lines with the highest seed quality parameters were newlineNDCP13, Kashi Shudha, RCCP1, Kashi kanchan, Kashi gouri and Ujjain AC. The newlinegenotypes viz., Kashi kanchan, Kashi gouri, Kashi nidhi, Arka garima, NDCP13, newlineBCKV1, Kashi unnati and RCV 395 had regression coefficient greater than unity and newlinenon-significant deviation from regression means with superior mean performance newlinetherefore, this is well suitable for favorable conditions. So special emphasis should be newlinegiven on the above traits during selection breeding for cowpea improvement newlineprogramme. newlineKey word: genotypes, cowpea, genetic variation, seed quality parameter newline
