newlineOsteoarthritis in India
newlineBACKGROUND: The lower extremity osteoarthritis (LEOA) is a rising burden
newlinein India as well as globally. Understanding the functioning issues of LEOA with
newlinethe concept of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and
newlineHealth (ICF) is necessitate for planning better management strategies. The
newlineavailable ICF core sets (ICF-CS) for osteoarthritis in general may not be
newlinerelevant for Indian population as the functioning issues differ with different
newlinecontextual factors. Moreover, ICF-CS specific for LEOA in Indian context is
newlinerecommended for batter understanding the functioning of Indian population.
newlineOBJECTIVES: To identify which ICF categories best represent the functional
newlineprofile of individuals with lower limb osteoarthritis and to develop an ICF-CS for
newlineLEOA suitable for the Indian population.
newlineMETHODOLOGY: The current study adopted the standard methodology
newlinerecommend for the development of ICF-CS. The current study design is a
newlinemulticentered mixed method study which consisted of four preparatory studies
newlineto identify the meaningful functioning issues. The preparatory studies were (I)
newlineresearchers perspective (literature review), (II) experts perspective (online
newlinesurvey), (III) patients perspective (focused grouped interview) and (IV) clinical
newlineperspective (empirical study) that identify meaningful functioning issues of
newlineLEOA population in Indian context. The identified meaningful functioning
newlineconcepts from each of the preparatory study were linked with ICF categories
newlineusing standard linking rules and reported the data descriptively.
newlineDuring preparatory studies, 164 ICF categories were identified as meaningful.
newlineThese categories were simplified to 81 level-2 ICF categories for better visibility
newlinein the expert s consensus process. A pool of experts, including orthopedic
