In this study, lab-scale hybrid loop airlift photobioreactor (HLALPBR)was used to culture Scenedesmusabundans and Chlorella pyrenoidosa indomestic wastewater, in order to reduce the cost incurred by chemical-basednutrients. The shorter lag phase time (lt1d) of both microalgae implicated thatmicroalgae used in this study has the higher ability to adapt and acclimate thewastewater. The parameters in relation with the wastewater treatment processhave been studied. The results depicted that nitrogen recovery by S. abundansand C. pyrenoidosa was 92% and 88%, whereas the phosphorus removal was84% and 81%, respectively. While the COD removal by S. abundans and C.pyrenoidosa grown in same domestic wastewater was 83 and 84%. As thework was intended to examine the viability of microalgae for the productionof bio-oil, the work was focussed to assess the maximum lipid as well asbiomass production of two distinctive algae. As a result, the maximumbiomass content and productivity were obtained as 3.42 gLand#8315;¹ and201 mg Land#8315;¹ dand#8315;¹ for S. abundans, followed by 2.66 gLand#8315;¹ and 154 mg Land#8315;¹ dand#8315;¹ forC. pyrenoidosa. Despite the biomass productivity, S. abundans showedsuperior lipid accumulation (33.8 ± 1.05 wt.%) than the other species.Furthermore, the amount of COand#8322; sequestered by S. abundans was379 mg Land#8315;¹ dand#8315;¹ which was 31% higher compared to the C. pyrenoidosa. Thesefindings implicated that S. abundans can be potentially employed for the biooilproduction. newline
