Abstract
The survival of human beings in the society is dependent on the ways in which humans communicate with each other. Communication can be considered as the backbone of human survival and we humans are very much dependent on it. Imagine a world where we are not able to express our emotions and needs it is something which is very difficult to think about. There are many ways in which we communicate but majorly this has been categorized into verbal and non-verbal. Among the two non-verbal has is considered to have more impact on the process of communication. Non-verbal communication is done with our entire body. Our expressions, hand gestures, walking style, eye movement everything can be used for conveying what we want to. These types have been named as Kinesics (body movements), Haptics (hand movements), Oculesics (eye movements), Proxemics (physical distance) and Chronemics (time and space). When we talk about communication, cinema is one of the best mediums of communication and is watched by everyone worldwide. But in a country like India cinema is made in multiple languages and this creates a barrier for its reach. But one way to overcome this barrier is to use non-verbal communication in cinema. In India the prestigious film award is the national film. These movies are watched and appreciated worldwide irrespective of their language. In this research the Hindi and Bengali national award winning movies were analyzed on the basis of some set parameters of non-verbal communication and it was found that these movies use a lot of non-verbal cues to take the story forward. Among all the elements kinesics (the use of body gestures and postures) was found to be used the most for communication purpose. Since the research was done on Indian movies the study would have been incomplete without the mention of the oldest treatise of communication, the nand#257;and#7789;yaand#347;and#257;stra. Through this research a connection was established between the elements of non-verbal communication and the elements of abhinaya mentioned in the nand#257;and#7789;yaand#347;and#257;stra.
