Abstract
This thesis is based upon experimental investigation of three select glass systems with a focus on understanding concepts. These concepts are related to Physical, structural, optical, photoluminescence and non-linear optical studies. These families of glasses are complex mixed valence glasses which are technologically important due to their optical and non-linear optical properties. Oxide glasses have been developed for variety of applications, such as low temperature sealing materials in medical technology, biomedical devices, solid state lasers, optical fibers, sensors and laser host glasses. Presence of different network forming oxides results in different structural modification such as tri, tetra, penta, otho, para, meta borate structural units. Inclusions of alkali and alkaline earth oxides or reduction which leads to the formation of different types of modified structural units possessing varying degrees of connectivity which affects several properties of the resulting glasses.
