Abstract
Selection of materials for engineering applications is mostly based
newlineon requirements of bulk and macroscopic properties like strength ease of
newlinefabrication availability cost etc However most engineering failures due to
newlinefatigue corrosion etc are known to be initiated at the surface Initiation of
newlinecracks defects at the surface is a life limiting factor This is because the
newlinesurfaces of the components are exposed to severe thermal chemical and
newlinestress conditions Methods to selectively enhance the surface properties of the
newlinematerials can therefore result in significant benefits However for service
newlineenvironment leading to corrosive wear and erosion apart from the selection of
newlinematerial suitable surface modification procedures that can withstand various
newlinetypes of stress are required
