Abstract
Modern Power Systems generally operate under more stressed conditions due to continuous
newlineincrease in demand for electrical energy and Right of Way and other constraints on new
newlinetransmission lines. Hence it is challenging for power system engineers to efficiently utilize existing
newlinetransmission facilities. Power flow through existing transmission lines can be increased and the
newlinelines can be loaded close to their thermal limits by the use of FACTS controllers in the line. Voltage
newlineSource Converter (VSC) based FACTS controllers have several advantages over conventional
newlineFACTS controllers based on thyristors. The series connected FACTS controller, SSSC is useful in
newlineincreasing the power flow through the line. STATCOM is a shunt connected FACTS controller
newlinewhich is helpful for better voltage regulation and damping oscillations.
newlineVSC based FACTS controllers has an additional advantage of incorporating an energy
newlinestorage device at the DC bus. This facilitates real power exchange with the network and hence it
newlineis possible to control the reactive and real power flow in a better way. However, compensating
newlinelines with FACTS controllers incorporating energy storage device poses new challenges for the
newlineoperation and control of power system. Designing a reliable and fast acting protection system for
newlinesuch systems, ensuring the transient stability of the system is a challenging task for the protection
newlineengineer.
newlineOperation and control of FACTS controllers with energy storage modifies the apparent
newlineimpedance measured by conventional distance relay and a detailed investigation is necessary to
newlinestudy the impact of FACTS controllers with energy storage device on the performance of distance
newlinerelay. There is hardly any reported work on the emulated reactance and resistance by SSSC and
newlineemulated conductance and susceptance by STATCOM with four quadrant operation and its impact
newlineon the operation of distance relay. This thesis presents the detailed model of SSSC with energy
newlinestorage (SSSC ES) and STATCOM with energy storage (STATCOM ES
