Abstract
newline Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an operational area of research
newlinedue to its wide applications in health care, military, and environmental
newlinesurveillance. Wireless body area network (WBAN) is a subdomain of WSN.
newlineRapid development in low-powered nano and microtechnology makes tiny
newlinemedical sensors to be placed on the surface of the body and implanted inside
newlinethe body. The main aim of the WBAN is to diagnose the disease by predicting
newlinethe symptoms of the disease in the early stage and communicating it to
newlinedoctors and caretakers. WBAN sensors collect the heart
newline(electrocardiography), brain electrical activities (electroencephalographs),
newlineblood sugar, blood pressure, body temperature, oxygen saturation, and CO2
newlineconcentration using wearable sensors. It is worth mentioning that WBANs
newlinerequire only a small number of nodes for operation. Therefore, the protocols
newlineused in the MAC and network layer are a lot simpler than traditional WSNs.
newlineWBAN has complex channel conditions due to on-body and off-body
newlinecommunication between nodes and coordinators.
