Randomized Control Trial to evaluate the Effectiveness of Community Based Educational Intervention CBEI on Knowledge Attitude and Skill regarding Breast Cancer and its preventive measures among rural women of Hoshiarpur Punjab

Abstract

One of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases is Breast Cancer. The risk factors newlinefor breast cancer are unknown that may lead to affect one in eight women. There are newlinevarious factors that alter women s behaviour towards breast cancer and its preventive newlinemeasures which should be avoided and enlighten their consensus. newlineA Community-Based Educational Intervention is a simple effort to overcome such newlinediseases and helps in enhancing knowledge, bringing a positive attitude, and increasing newlinepractice towards breast cancer and its preventive measures. newlineAim newlineThe aim of the is to determine the effectiveness of Community Based Educational newlineIntervention (CBEI) on Knowledge, Attitude, and Skill of Breast Cancer and its newlinepreventive measuresamong rural women. newlineMaterial and Methodology newlineA Randomized control trial study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of newlineCommunity-Based Educational Intervention (CBEI) on knowledge, attitude, and skill newlineregarding Breast Cancer and its preventive measures among rural women of Hoshiarpur, newlinePunjab. The parallel arm randomized control trial design was used, the study participants newlinewere randomly assigned to experimental group and control group. The principles of newlinerandomization, manipulation, control group is comparing intervention between two newlinegroup. Standard deviation and mean difference of pilot study was used to determine the newlinesample size by using power analysis. Multi stage cluster sampling technique was used to newlinerecruit 400 samples (200 samples for experimental group, 200 samples for control group) newlinefrom selected four villages of Hoshiarpur,Punjab. newlineResults newlineThe repeated measures for pre-test (K1) and post test (K2, K3, K4) knowledge scores newlineamong rural women in experimental group showed that there was significant difference newlinein knowledge scores among various observations (F=242.39, plt0.001). The pre-test (A1) newlineand post test (A2, A3, A4) attitude scores among rural women in experimental group newlineshowed that there was significant difference in attitude scores among various newlineobservations (F=323.76, plt0.001). The pre-test (S1) and post test (S2, S3, S4) skillscores among rural women in experimental group showed that there was significant newlinedifference in skill scores among various observations (F=230.77, plt0.001). newlineThere was significant association between pre-test level of knowledge and newlinedemographic variables such as age (and#967;2 =11.49, p= 0.021), religion (and#967;2 =20.47, newlinep= 0.000) monthly per capita income (and#967;2= 11.66, p=0.019), family history of newlinebreast cancer (and#967;2 = 12.21, p=0.000), source of information (and#967;2= 12.57, p=0.013). newlineThere was significant association between pre-test level of attitude and newlinedemographic variables such religion (and#967;2 =17.09, p= 0.000), family history of newlinebreast cancer (and#967;2 = 5.125, p=0.023). There was significant association between newlinepre-test level of skill and demographic variables such as family history of breast newlinecancer (and#967;2 = 31.19, p=0.000). newlineThe positive correlation between knowledge and attitude observed in pre-test, newlinepost-test one, post-two and post-test three with r value of 0.815, 0.697, 0.707, newline0.726 respectively which were significant at level of p= 0.017, 0.028, 0.027, newline0.004 respectively. Also , there is positive correlation between knowledge and newlineskill in pre-test, post-test one, post-two and post-test three with r value of 0.718, newline0.726, 0.736, 0.776 respectively which were significant at level of p= 0.031, newline0.028, 0.024, 0.022 respectively. Further, there is positive correlation between newlineattitude and skill in pre-test, post-test one, post-two and post-test three with r newlinevalue of 0.710, 0.714, 0.728, 0.728 respectively which were significant at level of newlinep= 0.034, 0.031, 0.028, 0.025 respectively. newlineConclusion: It is concluded that effectiveness of community based educational newlineintervention (CBEI) on level of knowledge, attitude and skill measures related to breast newlinecancer and its preventive measures was significant in experimental group than control newlinegroup. Therefore, CBEI was effective in improving the knowledge of rural women in newlinethe experimental group. It also concluded that there is positive correlation between newlineknowledge and attitude, knowledge and skill, and attitude and skill among rural women. newlineKeywords: Attitude scale, Women, Breast Cancer, Breast Self Examination newline
