Abstract
newline The present study was conducted in North-Eastern Karnataka during 2020-21 with
newlineobjectives of to understand the characteristics and functioning of seed production system,
newlineperception and entrepreneurial behaviour of vegetable seed growers, economics and resource
newlineuse efficiency of vegetable seed crops and also to know the push and pull factors influencing
newlinethe vegetable seed production with sample size of 180 who were involved in vegetable seed
newlineproduction from past three years. Ex post facto research design was used for the study.Public
newlinesector involvement is most widespread in the production and processing of seed for highvolume self-pollinated crops. Private sector is far more extensively involved in hybrid seed
newlineproduction and processing than it is in varietal development. In India, while all public sector
newlinevarieties are certified compulsory while this process is voluntary for private varieties.Nearly
newlineeighty per cent of the seed growers (79.45 %) belonged to high level of perception. Nearly
newlinefifty per cent (49.44 %) of the growers belonged to high entrepreneurial behaviour
newlinecategory. The returns per rupee of expenditure (Rs.3.64) and R2
newlinevalue (0.84) was found to be
newlinehighest in chilli among all the vegetable crops. Majority (87.77%) of the seed growers
newlinesuggested that proper in field trainings must be imparted before seed production. The above
newlineresults concluded that vegetable seed production was profit oriented agribusiness even with
