Abstract
By using the active extracts like Momordica charantia (Aqueous extract),
newlineSyzygium Cumini (Hydro-alcoholic extract), Caesalpinia bonduc (Aqueous extract)
newlineand Withania coagulans (Aqueous extract), nine (9) formulations from F1to F9 were
newlineprepared. From these nine formulations, three formulations Viz. F9, F8 and F7 were
newlinefound to possess the best antidiabetic activity. Most significant antidiabetic activity
newlineshown by formulation F9 at 500mg/Kg b.w. dose.
newlineThe increased lipid profile in diabetes induced animals was reduced
newlinesignificantly after administration of formulation F9. The reduction of serum lipids may
newlinebe due to HMG CoA reductase enzyme, which is the important in the formation of
newlinecholesterol. One of the possible mechanisms of polyherbal formulation F9 may be due to
newlineinhibition
newlineof enhancement of the degradation and endogenous synthesis of formed cholesterol due
newlineto increased excretion through intestinal tract.
newlineII
newlineMost of the plant extracts in the formulation have been reported to be
newlinehepatoprotective due to improvement of liver function, increase in the uptake of glucose
newlineand utilization and it may be possible mechanism for this study.
newlineIn histopathological studies of liver, pancreas and kidney of alloxan induced
newlinediabetic animals treated with and without polyherbal formulation F9, animals without
newlinewithout showed degeneration, necrosis and inflammation of tissues while animals
newlinetreated with Polyherbal formulation F9 shows repair or reduced the damage to the
newlinetissues.
newlineIn the OGTT studies (Oral glucose tolerance test), administration of glucose
newlineincreased considerably the blood sugar levels at 30 minutes. Polyherbal formulation F9
newlineincreased significantly the glucose tolerance in dose dependant manner.
newlinePresence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins and saponins detected in
newlinepreliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts.Hence presence of these
newlinecomponents (Primary and secondary metabolites) in polyherbal formulation F9 may be
newlineresponsible for the observed effects.Extrapancreatic action of pancreatic and#946; cell function
