Human rights issues of urban homeless in Mohali and Ludhiana cities of Punjab

Abstract

This study attempts to conceptualize the problem of urban homelessness from a broad perspective from the standpoint of human rights. It elaborates on various human rights issues faced by homeless people with special reference to homeless women in their day-to-day life in the Mohali and Ludhiana Cities of Punjab. Further, the study analyzed the functioning of the night shelters/Rain baseras in protecting the rights to shelter of homeless people. Furthermore, the efficacy of the NULM-SUH Scheme in terms of facilities and awareness has been studied. The study emphasizes upon integrated actions involving policymakers, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders for respecting, promoting and protecting the rights of the urban homeless. newline
