A study on the attitude of adolescent school students towards physical education programme in relation to health related physical fitness

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the attitude of adolescent school students towards the physical education programme in relation to health related physical fitness. The data pertaining to this study were collected on 394 boys and girls students in different school and different block in Bankura district randomly selected as sample. The age of the subjects were running 11 to 16 years. Collection of the data level of physical education activity was measured by means of the four by one-day physical activity recall questionnaire (Cale, 1993). And Attitude was measured using the Adolescent Attitude towards Physical Education Questionnaire (AAPEQ; Shropshire, 1997). The AAPEQ is a 23 item questionnaire consisting of five factors. Health related fitness measured of five components were measured. The level of significance was set at plt0.05. Finding of the study Attitude towards PE, as measured using the PAAPEQ (Shropshire, 1997), elicited total attitude scores as well as values for each of the five attitude factors for analysis. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) with backwards elimination were conducted to assess any differences in attitude towards PE data according to gender and school year for both phases of the study. Results of MANOVA carried out on the data collected during phase one revealed a significant, multivariate, higher order by gender by school year interaction (F20,1234 = 1.9, plt0.05). Significant, multivariate main effects were identified according to school year . Means and standard deviations for measures of health related fitness was used in this study. The results of analysis carried out on data collected during phase one indicated weak yet significant positive relationships between total attitude towards PE and energy expenditure (r = .16, plt0.01), time spent in moderate activity (r = .12, plt0.05) and time spent in vigorous activity (r = .18, plt0.01. Results from phase one indicated weak yet significant positive relationships between cardiovascular endurance and average daily energy expenditure (r = .21, plt0.05) and time spent in vigorous activity (r = .20, plt0.05). However cardiovascular endurance was not found to be significantly related to the amount of time spent in moderate activity. newline
