Molecular methods may prove useful in precisely detecting infections in hospitalized patients as well as antibiotic resistance genes. In our study, infection rate of BSI caused by Gram Negative bacilli was 313/2426 (12.9%), mostly from males 205 (65%) and the most pre-dominant pathogen being K. pneumoniae 134/313 (42.8%). Blood stream infections were highest 163/313 (52%) in the age group 0-1 year. GNB showed maximum resistance to Ciproflxacin 215/313 (68.7%) followed by Piperacillin/Tazobactum 201/313 (64.2%). Resistance of K.pneumoniae alone to Ciprofloxacin was 120/134 (89.5%) followed by Pipercillin/tazobactam 119/134 (88.81%). MDR producers among K. pneumoniae were 122/134 (91%). Carbapenems producers were 112/134 (83.5%) while ESBL producers were only 10/134 (7.4%). As many as 37/44 (84%) of the 42/44 Vitek 2 confirmed carbapenem resistant K.pneumoniae had carbapenem resistant gene on molecular typing. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of ESBLs and Carbapenemase producing K.pneumoniae therefore, imperative for initiation of effective antibiotic therapy and a favorable clinical outcome. newline newline
