Abstract
Electromyography (EMG) is a technique for evaluating and recording the
newlineelectrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. EMG is performed using
newlinean instrument called an electromyograph, to produce a record called
newlinean electromyogram. An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated
newlineby muscle cells. The signals can be analyzed to detect medical abnormalities,
newlineactivation level, or recruitment order or to analyze the biomechanics of human or
newlineanimal movement. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
newlineHistory of EMG:
newlineThe first documented experiments dealing with EMG started with Francesco
newlineRedi s works in 1666. Redi discovered a highly specialized muscle of the electric
newlineray fish (Electric Eel) generated electricity. By 1773, Walsh had been able to
newlinedemonstrate that the eel fish s muscle tissue could generate a spark of electricity.
newlineIn 1792, a publication entitled De Viribus Electricitatis in Motu Musculari
newlineCommentarius appeared, written by Luigi Galvani, in which the author
newlinedemonstrated that electricity could initiate muscle contraction.
