Abstract
Plant secondary metabolites have proven to be an invaluable source of pharmaceuticals with their varied biological properties viz. antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer effects. Terpenoids, alkaloids, phenolics and flavonoids are some of the bioactive compounds that contribute to the medicinal value of a plant. However, indiscriminate use of plants for extraction of the valuable compounds can lead to mass destruction, even leading to loss of biodiversity. Alternatively, in vitro cultivation through tissue culture related techniques can be a valuable method for obtaining precious pharmaceuticals. Agrobacterium mediated transformations can be a resourceful alternative, for a rapid and direct route for introduction and expression of specific traits. Transgenic plants obtained by Agrobacterium mediated transformation or advanced technologies involving metabolic engineering can help in increasing the yield of valuable pharmaceuticals.
