newlineABSTRACT
newlineOpen channel flow is where water flows down an open channel with its top surface
newlineexposed to atmospheric pressure. Hydraulic jump a classical and an important
newlinephenomenon in open channel flow, which sometimes is mainly used for kinetic energy
newlinedissipation at the downstream side of a spillway. The stilling basins are commonly used
newlineto dissipate the energy and protect the downstream floor from erosion. The jump length
newlineand sequent depth are significant factors that govern the major characteristics of the
newlinejump.
newlineThis experimental research evaluates the effect of crushed stone bed on the hydraulic
newlinejump. A study of the hydraulic jump, on a rectangular horizontal channel in Water
newlineResource Laboratory, of Department of Civil Engineering, Visvesvaraya National
newlineInstitute of Technology, Nagpur. The necessary related instrumentations have been
newlinedesigned and installed as part of the present work. The study involves both experimental
newlineinvestigation and theoretical computation. Extensive measurements have been made
newlineregarding the characteristics of hydraulic jumps as sequent depths, energy dissipation on
newlineartificially roughened beds for Froude numbers between 3 and 10. Five different types of
newlinecrushed stones roughness elements having different roughness height were installed
newlineseparately, on a channel bottom throughout the experiments to obtain rough surfaces and
newlineafter each set, the size is increased. Roughness elements were built from the Coarse
newlineaggregate (Crushed stone) implemented parallel to the flow direction.
newlineThe selection of crushed stones was motivated by the fact that they are used as coarse
newlineaggregate in concrete during the construction of the lined channels. These stones are
newlinelocally available and can be broken as per the size required. One more added advantage
newlineof these stones is that they have a very high degree of angularity , which adds an
newlineadvantage of the more rough surface area being exposed to the flow Because of the high
newlineangularity, their laying on the bed of the cha
