Abstract
seed pelleting on seed production of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were
newlineconducted during rabi/summer seasons of 2006-07 and 2007-08 in the Department of Seed
newlineScience and Technology and Institute for Agri Bio-Technology, University of Agricultural
newlineSciences, Dharwad. The field study conducted on effect of five dates of sowing on seed yield
newlineand quality of ten French bean genotypes revealed that among the dates of sowings, first
newlineweek of October sowing of DWD-FB-1, DWD-FB-57 and DWD-FB-53 genotypes recorded
newlinehigher seed yield (2270,2187and 2124 kg/ ha respectively) with higher growth, yield
newlinecomponents and seed quality parameters and was followed by first week of September
newlinesowing. Studies on seed pelleting revealed that seeds pelleted with Borax (100 mg), ZnSO4
newline(250 mg) per kg of seed and ZnSO4 + Borax recorded higher seed yield (2412, 2247 and
newline2240 kg/ha),seed recovery (94.70, 92.93 and 91.45 %, respectively), seed germination and
newlineseedling vigour index.
newlineMorphological characterization of French bean genotypes based on seed coat colour,
newlineshape, test weight, seed length, phenological, seedling characters was found to be more
newlinereliable for varietal identification. Chemical tests, viz. Phenol , Modified phenol , FeSO4, KOH
newlineand NaOH tests did not show any reaction to the chemicals and hence they were found
newlineunsuitable for characterization of varieties in French bean.
newlineIn RAPD studies, 33 primers produced 72 amplicons, of which 53 levels showed
newlinepolymorphism amongst ten genotypes. Based on sample matching co-efficient, a genetic
newlinesimilarity was constructed by using RAPD data to access genetic relatedness. All the ten
newlinegenotypes were grouped in three clusters. DWD-FB 9, DWD-FB-8 and DWD-FB-18 in
newlineCluster-I, DWD-FB-27, DWD-FB-6 and DWD-FB-1 in Cluster-II and DWD-FB-57,
newlineDWD-FB-53, IIHR-909 and Contender in Cluster-III. Genetic dissimilarity co-efficient varied
newlinebetween 0.039 and 0.06.
