Abstract
Use of precast concrete in earthquake resistant structures is considered with suspicion
newlinebecause of their poor performance in major earthquakes. However literature indicates that
newlinewell designed precast concrete buildings have performed remarkable well in past
newlineearthquakes. Seismic performance and behaviour of precast concrete structures during
newlinevarious earthquakes is initially studied and briefly described as reported in literature. A
newlinehistorical perspective on the use of precast concrete structures in seismic affected areas
newlineand chronological changes in codal provisions are presented. Seismic design concepts in
newlinebrief are described for precast concrete beams, beam-column, beam-column joints and
newlineshear dominated system. Design examples of precast concrete diaphragm, building frame
newlineand connections are presented as a guideline in Indian perspective. Analytical studies
newlineusing nonlinear pushover static analysis for the seismic performance and behavior of
newlineprecast concrete elements in buildings have been performed. Seismic design provisions of
newlineprecast concrete structures in various country codes are studied and reported briefly. A
newlinebrief review of the practice on seismic design and construction of precast elements is
newlinepresented .An attempt for suggesting recommendation to Indian codes of practice for
newlinedesign of precast concrete structures is made based on the present work.
