To validate forensic assessment interview with polygraph technique in identifying deception truthfulness in crime cases

Abstract

Any investigating officer investigates the case based on evidences found and their assessment of the information gathered from crime suspects. An assessment has to be scientifically backed to increase the conviction and deliver justice. As it would move the case in the right direction, without imposing any pain on individuals. FAINT and Polygraph are ideal for assessing deception and truthfulness as it takes into account physical and psychological changes in crime suspects along with keen observation of the individual s body language. newlineDescriptive study has been conducted on 100 samples using purposive sampling method to validate Polygraph and Faint techniques in identifying deception or truthfulness in crime cases, i.e., murder, sexual offenses and theft from 2015 to 2017. Primary data for FAINT Test was collected from various districts of Uttarakhand directly from the respondents and secondary data for a Polygraph test, taken from CFSL, CBI, New Delhi. newlineResults disclosed that crime suspects from low socio economic status and young male were more deceptive. Uneducated subjects were more truthful compared to educated subjects. Females were more truthful compared to males. The Pearson correlation coefficient value of 0.932 confirms a significant positive correlation between Polygraph and Faint tests (r=.932, p lt .01). Polygraph and Faint technique show the same result, irrespective of age, socio economic status, education and gender of crime suspects. Thus they can be used as a alternative technique during an investigation to determine the truthfulness, deceptiveness or inconclusiveness. Implementation of this scientific technique at the early stage would lead to focused investigation, minimize the cost, promote goodwill, and refrain the Police personnel from violating human rights and this would lead to speedy recovery of truth and justice to the victim.
