Abstract

Traditional medical systems (TMS), of which the most acknowledged and newlineinvestigated are Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Indian Traditional newlineMedicine (Ayurveda, Sidha, Unani), are used worldwide. The World Health newlineOrganization (WHO) estimates that about 80% of the population living in developing newlinecountries relies almost exclusively on traditional medicine for their primary health newlinecare needs. In almost all the traditional medicine, the medicinal plants play a major newlinerole and constitute backbone of the traditional medicine. Indian Material Medica newlineincludes more than 2000 drugs of natural origin almost all of which are derived from newlinedifferent traditional system and folklore practices. Out of these drugs derived from newlinetraditional system, 400 are of mineral and animal origin while rest is of vegetable newlineorigin. India has a rich heritage traditional medicine and the traditional health care newlinesystem have been flourishing for many years. Lot of efforts has been taken by the newlinegovernment and private sectors for the development of traditional system based on newlinethese methods. Western medicine continues to show the influence of ancient newlinepractices. Isolation of bioactive components are also very beneficial current examples newlineare the use of cardiac glycosides from the purple foxglove Digitalis purpurea and newlinerelated plants, opiates from the opium poppy Papaver somniferum, reserpine from newlineRauwolfia species, and quinine from Cinchona species. More recently, there has been newlineinterest in other product from traditional systems of medicine. Artemisin is an active newlineanti-malarial compound isolated from Artemisia annua, a constituent of the traditional newlineChinese antimalarial preparation Qinghaosu and forskolin was isolated from Coleus newlineforskohlii, a species used in Ayurvedic and Unani preparation for cardiac disorders. newline
