Abstract
The compression Heat pump water heaters are energy efficient heating device used for water heating, space heating and desalination applications. The performance of heat pump water heaters are improved by integrating with renewable energy sources like solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, geothermal, wind and its hybrid forms. Out of these sources, solar energy is the viable option to integrate with heat pump water heater. The refrigerant effect produced in the evaporator of a heat pump water heater is utilized effectively to cool the photovoltaic panels and to enhance its efficiency. The heat pump water heaters are using R134a as working fluid, which has high global warming impact of 1430. As per the Kigali agreement 2016, the refrigerants with global warming impact more than 150 are restricted to use. As a result, the hydrocarbon mixture comprises of R290and R600a in the mass fraction of 0.6:0.4 (by mass) was selected as a possible substitute to replace R134a which has global warming impact of less than 20. The hydrocarbon mixture (R290/R600a) has a glide-temperature of 4-7°C, which has an advantage of boiling in wide range of temperature and maintain the evaporator at uniform temperature. These two main advantages of the binary hydrocarbon mixture (environment friendly and zeotropic nature) makes a viable option to use in photovoltaic thermal evaporator assisted compression heat pump water heater.
