Abstract
The electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC), often known as a supercapacitor (SC), are dominated by its functional characteristics - such as quick charge and discharge ability, high power density, very long cycle life, improved battery system efficiency with reduced environmental pollution levels. They possess the unique capability to supply fluctuating, transient, as well as instantaneous power demands of short durations without thermal instability. On the contrary, the lifespan and power density of the batteries are constrained and unable to handle abrupt and dynamic changes in peak loads. The AC materials available in the market possess low mesoporosity, which results in a limited capacitance and their poor electrical conductivity give low power density. The two types of electrolytes namely aqueous, and organic type are used in the commercial SC cells. The reported cell voltage for the SC cell is 0.9-1.1V for the aqueous electrolyte and 2.5-2.7V for the organic electrolytes.
newlineAccording to the literature review, limited research has been reported in respect of cheaper carbon precursor materials with a research gap pertaining to the use of Scrap Rubber Tyre (SRT) as cost-effective carbon precursor material. The disposal of such abundantly available SRTs results in serious environmental problems and pollution as rubbers are unlikely to be decomposed or biologically degradable. Also, there is a research gap associated to the use of semi-aqueous electrolytes in the SCs, which can give SC cell characteristics in between the aqueous and organic electrolyte. Therefore, in order to address the research gaps, the SRT as carbon precursor material has been used to obtain carbon black material after its nitrogenated pyrolysis.
