Abstract

newlineIntroduction: Neonates who experience painful procedures during hospital stays are overlooked and ignored by their caretakers. Neonatal pain assessment and management should be addressed promptly to prevent harmful effects eventually. The study is aimed to determine the effectiveness of 25% dextrose oral solution (DS) versus direct breastfeed milk (DBM) for neonates undergoing BCG vaccination in relieving pain as assessed by the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), changes in heart rate (HR), O2 saturation (SPO2), and duration of crying. The objective of the study was to compare the mean pain score of neonates with (NIPS), heart rate and Oand#8322; saturation, who were administered 25% dextrose oral solution and direct breast milk during, at 2 minutes, and 5 minutes after the procedure. newlineMethods: Randomized controlled non-inferiority design was done. The 130 samples, were randomized into experimental (n1 = 65) and control (n2 = 65) groups who were fulfilling inclusion criteria such as neonates born in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation maternity Home Dispensary, term neonates with gestation age of 37 to 40 weeks, and undergoing BCG vaccination, whose mothers were willing to participate in the study, neonates who were healthy and taking mother s feed, mothers who did not have any feeding problem. The nonprobability convenience sampling technique was used to select 130 samples randomized and allotted to the experimental group to receive 25% dextrose oral solution and the control group to receive direct breastfeeding 2 minutes before BCG vaccination.
