Abstract
The electric supply industry across the globe has witnessed
newlineconvincing changes in its organization and management for the past three
newlinedecades. The motivation for operational and organizational changes of this
newlinederegulated industry and the regulatory regime is generally driven by a desire
newlineto make electric sector more efficient through competition. Competitive
newlinemarket provides the driving force for the generators to operate in its most
newlineefficient and economic manner in order to derive most of the customer
newlinefocused benefits as well.
newlineHowever, operation and control of restructured electricity markets
newlinepose more complex and technical challenges than the conventional
newlinemonopolistic market structure. This thesis has mainly addressed the issues of
newlineAvailable Transfer Capability (ATC) determination, sensitivity of network
newlineuncertainties on ATC calculation, electricity transmission pricing and
newlinetransmission congestion management.
newlineThe ATC of a transmission network refers to its unutilized transfer
newlinecapability available for further commercial activity over and above the
newlineexisting transfer commitments. ATC in an electricity market is required to be
newlineupdated dynamically based on the actual operating conditions. For the
newlineaccurate and fast determination of ATC, network sensitivity based methods
newlineutilizing DC power transfer distribution factors and AC power transfer
newlinedistribution factors are being used. However, these factors provide quite
newlineinaccurate results as they are calculated based on the real power flow alone in
newlinethe transmission lines. The role of reactive power flow in the line loading has much significance and this might drive the computation to wrong or at least
newlineunreliable ATC results. In this regard, a novel non-iterative approach is
newlineproposed to calculate ATC under system intact mode and Contingent ATC
newline(CATC) under (n-1) line outage contingency mode of operation using
newlineApparent power Transfer Distribution Factors (STDFs) and Line Outage
newlineApparent power Transfer Distribution Factors (LOSTDFs) respectively.
