Efficiency and productivity analysis of microfinance institutions in South Asia

Abstract

The present study made a sincere effort to assess the efficiency and productivity analysis of microfinance institutions from South Asia and try to understand its relationship with several factors. But due to the non-availability of the data, the study has analysed the data till 2020. But the emergence of Covid in late 2020 might have affected the results. Further, the study has considered only secondary data from Mix Market database from World Bank. But for understanding of the practical challenges, in further studies the combination of primary and secondary data can be analysed. The primary data may enlighten the stakeholders about the behavioural aspects affecting the efficiency and productivity of microfinance institutions. The study has focused only on South Asia region. In order to further understand the impact of microfinance in combating poverty and achieving dual mission, more areas like Sub-Sharan Africa, Middle-East and North Africa, Latin America and Caribbean can be incorporated. Similarly, future work may be carried out to include some other variables like women empowerment, entrepreneurship development by MFIs, country specific legal issues etc. The forthcoming studies are expected to overcome the above-mentioned limitations. newline
