Abstract
A smart grid is a practical electrical system which is an amalgamation of multiple
newlinetechnologies that can prudently assimilate the requirements of various consumers, clients
newlineas well as producers to attain secure, sustainable and economical supply of electricity.
newlineThe implementation and utilization of effective mechanisms including the development of
newlinenovel efficient protocols is very important to further enhance the performance of Wireless
newlineSensor Networks (WSNs) deployed in an electric grid to upgrade it as a Smart Grid (SG).
newlineThe Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols providing efficient synchronization and
newlineeffective scheduling to mitigate energy-hole problem, collisions, idle-listening, over-
newlineemitting, formation of bottlenecks and depletion of battery power to diminish delay and
newlineelongate network lifetime are of prime importance. This research work has analysed and
newlineevaluated the influence of beaconed and beaconless modes of ZigBee; the impact of
newlinedifferent electromagnetic propagation environments present in the various strident regions
newlinesuch as 500 kV substation, main power control room and underground transformer vault
newlineand the impact of Line of Sight (LOS) and Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) communication on
newlinethe performance of wireless sensor networks in smart grids.
