The present investigation entitled Studies on Gene Action for Yield and it s Contributing Traits in Greengram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] was carried out at Student Instruction Farm, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology Kanpur involving genetically diverse nineteen greengram genotypes (16 lines and 3 testers) and crossed into line x tester fashion during kharif, 2021 to obtain 48 F1 hybrids. To obtain backcross seeds (BC1 and BC2) for generation mean analysis, eight F1s were selected on the basis of their performance of seed yield and are crossed with their both parental genotypes during zaid 2022. The final trial comprising 131 treatments (19 parents + 48 F1 + 48 F2 + 8 BC1 + 8 BC2) was conducted in Randomized block design with three replications in kharif, 2022 Analysis of variance revealed that mean sum of squares due to genotypes or treatments were highly significant for all the characters in F1 and F2 generations except for number of branches per plant indicating the low variability of the genotypes for number of branches per plant. Analysis of variance for combining ability showed highly significant differences for all the characters except number of branches per plant. The higher magnitude of variance due to gca for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod indicating the preponderance of additive gene action for these characters. For pod length, 100 seed weight, biological yield, harvest index, protein content and seed yield per plant, variances due to sca was higher in magnitude. The degree of dominance exhibited over dominance for number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length, 100 seed weight, biological yield, harvest index, protein content and seed yield per plant. The degree of dominance exhibited partial dominance for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity
