Abstract
Natural fiber composites play a major role as a substitute to plastics due
newlineto their low cost, higher strength, ease of availability, better stiffness, and eco
newlinefriendly and biodegradable. Among different natural composites, the hybrid
newlinenatural fiber composites have been found in various fields of applications
newlinesuch as aerospace, automotive industry, marine field and building structures.
newlineIn this study, the fibers are extracted from leaves of sisal, bast (skin) of
newlinejute plants and bract on a palmyra tree and the fibers are treated with NaOH
newlinealkali solution. An attempt is made to fabricate three hybrid natural fiber
newlinecomposites using natural fibers like Sisal(S), Palm(P), Jute(J) and Epoxy(E)
newlineresin in different weight ratios (Sample A, B and C) by compression molding
newlinemethod and their physical (thickness, density and thermal conductivity),
newlinemechanical(tensile, flexural, impact, moisture absorption) and acoustical
newlineproperties are investigated experimentally. The samples are prepared as per
newlineASTM standards to explore their physical, mechanical and acoustical
newlineproperties. The tensile, flexural and impact tests are carried out on the above
newlineprepared hybrid composite samples according to the ASTM D3039, ASTM D
newline790 and ASTM D 256 standards. The moisture absorption, thermal
newlineconductivity and sound absorption coefficient test using Impedance test tube
newlineare observed according to ASTM D 570 and ASTM E1530 and ASTM E
newline1050 standard respectively.
newlineThe mechanical characteristics (Tensile, flexural and impact strength of
newlinesisal/palm, sisal/jute and palm/jute hybrid epoxy composites with three
newlinedifferent weight ratios (sample A, B and C) were characterised. Similarly, an
newlineexperimental study on water absorption and thermal conductivity
newlinecharacteristics of (sisal/palm, sisal/jute and palm/jute) were carried out.
