Abstract
The aim of the present dissertation is to take note of varying causes of conjugal
newlinedisharmony in contemporary Indian society, to see how they have been artistically viewed
newlineand reviewed by Anita Desai and Shashi Deshpande in their earlier works of fiction, and,
newlinethen, to take note of the social change they have been able to make for in the process.
newlineThough critics and scholars are not unaware of what the proposed study really aims
newlineat, no full and consistent attempt, as far as marital disharmony is concerned, has so far been
newlinemade to underline its character in its historical perspective. Piecemeal interpretations and
newlineisolated explanations on individual authors may be found here and there in journals,
newlinecritiques and anthologies of papers. But, then, they are mostly elusive, and even arbitrary.
newlineThe proposed study is intended to be an attempt to analyze representative works of
newlinecontemporary Indian women novelists, especially Anita Desai and Shashi Deshpande, to see
newlinehow this form of literature has been peculiarly adaptable to the theme we have marked out
newlinefor exploration.
