dc.description.abstractiv newlineABSTRACT newlineThe aerospace and automobile industry undergoes a continuous strive to produce costeffective, newlinelightweight, and fuel-efficient structures, without compromising safety and newlinereliability, while in operation. Such endeavors led to significant improvement in structural newlinedesign, reduction in thickness of the components to optimize the usage of material, and use newlineof low-density materials. The extensive research in the use of low-density materials revealed newlinethat aluminum and magnesium alloys could substitute steel in several applications. This could newlinebe owed to the fact that the aluminium and magnesium alloys possess comparable stiffness, newlinerelatively higher strength-to-weight ratio, better metallic behavior, and good mechanical newlineproperties as compared to steels. The integration of these materials in the automobile and newlineaerospace sectors brings about numerous advantages, such as lower fuel costs, diminished newlineemissions, heightened payload capacity, and extended range. Replacing steels with newlinealuminium and magnesium alloys is the most favorable way to reduce the overall weight of newlinethe components. newlineJoining low-density materials by obtaining sound and strong welds to improve newlinestructural design, without compromising safety and reliability, has always been of great newlineinterest to engineers. The extensive literature on the joining of lightweight alloys including newlinealuminium and magnesium alloys revealed that these alloys could substitute steel in large newlineapplications. newlineIn the present study, aluminium alloy-AA6061-T6 and magnesium alloy-AZ31B were newlineselected based on wide application in the aerospace and automobile industries. Keeping in newlinemind the issues related to the joining process for these materials, it was decided to formulate newlinethe problem with clearly stated objectives to improve mechanical and metallurgical newlineproperties. For the present study, a butt weld joint configuration was used to join these two newlinematerials in a similar weld joint configuration using double-sided friction stir welding (DSFSW). newlineIn the first objective, the effect of 0°,
