Abstract
The method of the stirring-squeeze cast technique was employed to
newlinefabricate the SiC with variable weight percentages of 3%, 6%, and 9% and the
newlineBN with a constant weight percentage of 3% particles with AZ91D alloy. The
newlineinvestigations were carried out, on how the reinforcements influence the
newlinemicrostructure, mechanical, and corrosion characteristics of synthesized
newlinehybrid composites. The mechanical properties of the hybrid composites were
newlineenhanced due to the formation of grain refinement and the primary (Mg) and
newlinesecondary (Mg17Al12) phases created during the liquid forging process. For all
newlinehybrid composite specimens, the compressive strength and tensile strength
newlinehave been increased relatively with the increasing % of reinforcing particles.
newlineThe results of the tensile and compressive tests suggested that adding SiC and
newlineBN reinforcements to the base metal matrix will help the composites to
newlineperform better by resisting external forces. ASTM- B117 standard has been
newlineused to study the corrosion behaviour of hybrid composites. A pin-on-disc
newlinewear tester has been utilized to conduct the wear test of hybrid composites.
newlineThe coefficient of friction for the various load and sliding speeds over a
newlineconstant sliding distance of 1000m, of synthesised magnesium hybrid
newlinecomposites has been investigated in dry sliding conditions. The structural
newlinecharacteristics of synthetic composites have been studied using a scanning
newlineelectron microscope (SEM). The SEM pictures of the worn-out surfaces
newlineshowed that particle microfracture was the main mechanism causing abrasive
newlinewear. In addition, the wear resistance of magnesium hybrid composites has
newlinegreatly increased due to the presence of stiffer and stronger reinforcements
newlineparticles.
