Abstract
newline After independence the Government of India took several initiatives to improve the library
newlineservices in the country and eventually the Imperial Library, Calcutta was renamed as National
newlineLibrary of India in the year 1948; UNESCO sponsored Delhi Public Library was established
newlinein 1951; Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC) was initiated in 1952;
newlinefinancial assistance was given to several state governments under the
newline Scheme of
newlineImprovement of Library Services to set up State Central Libraries and District Libraries
newlineduring the First and Second Five Year Plan; in 1954 Government of India enacted the
newlineDelivery of Books (Public Libraries) Act and was amended in 1956 to include newspaper too.
newlineAll these initiatives were taken by the Central and State Government based on different
newlineproposals made by the eminent personalities time to time for the betterment of library
newlineservices. Moreover, the recommendations made by the Library Advisory Committee Report
newlinewas also considered with great care (Barua, 1992). Need for cooperation was also realised
newlineand hierarchical system was proposed by S.R.Ranganathan for proper implementation of
newlinelibrary services in every corner of the country considering several regional languages and to
newlineimprove the literacy among common people.
