Studies on adventitious root induction in Withania somnifera, its mass cultivation and production of therapeutically active withanolides through bioconversion

Abstract

Major Objectives: To develop a reproducible protocol for adventitious root induction and its mass production. To device a methodology to improve the active components present in W. somnifera roots. Findings: Culturing in vitro adventitious roots from superior chemotype Jawahar-20, in bioreactors could be used as a rapid and competent method of generating roots in higher mass. It would offer unique opportunities for producing withanolides without having to depend on field grown plants. Bioconversion has been recommended as a method to convert withanosides into therapeutically active withanolides.
