Efficient vertical handover decision algorithms for heterogeneous wireless networks

Abstract

Fourth Generation 4G wireless system is an integrated global network which provides broadband performance allows global roaming among different mobile access network and offers voice data and multimedia services 4G networks are Heterogeneous Wireless Networks HWNs which permit users with global devices to access the required service at anyplace and anywhere The challenging issues in 4G networking scenario are integrating HWNs like GPRS General Packet Radio Services UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunication Service Wi-Fi Wireless Fidelity Wi Max Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access WLAN Wireless Local Area Network and providing seamless Vertical Handover VHO and mobility management with good Quality of Service QoS support VHO refers to the ability of the Mobile Terminal to transfer the network access link to the best network access link among all available networks with no perceivable interruption to an ongoing application Three phases included in VHO are handover measurement and initiation Vertical Handover Decision VHD and Vertical Handover Execution VHE VHD is the most important phase that may affect the normal working of communication during VHO procedure The wrong selection of network leads to undesirable conditions such as weak Quality of Service QoS congestion in network call drop and wastage of network resources Hence the minimization of call drop and wastage of network resources congestion and good QoS are essential for better uninterrupted connection newline
