dc.description.abstractComposite drive shafts offer excellent strength to weight and newlineStiffness to weight ratios compared to metallic drive shafts However design newlineof a composite material needs an accurate evaluation of uncertainty in newlineloadings and material properties because these materials are very sensitive to newlineloading conditions due to their anisotropic nature Uncertainties present in newlinedesign parameters can lead a deterministic optimal design to have a high newlineprobability of failure because of the violations of certain hard constraints newlineThis is particularly true if the hard constraints are active at the optimal design newlineTo ensure high reliability and safety uncertainties inherent to or encountered newlineby the product during the entire life cycle must be considered and treated in newlinethe design process The RBDO Reliability Based Design Optimization approach newlineadopts a probability based design optimization framework to ensure high newlinereliability and safety When multidisciplinary design optimization methods newlineare used deterministic optimal designs are frequently pushed to the design newlineconstraint boundary leaving little or no room for tolerances or uncertainties newlinein design manufacture and operating processes Consequently deterministic newlineoptimal designs obtained without considering such uncertainties can result in newlineunreliable designs therefore calling for Reliability Based Design newlineOptimization newline newline newlineen_US
