Abstract

newline The present study entitled An Analysis of Consumer s Perception towards FDI in Retail Sector in India is directed at understanding the consumer s perception about the ways the FDI has impacted the Indian Retail Sector since the time it was introduced in the 1990s. This study thus purports to understand the perception of the consumers regarding the role of FDI in India and what repercussions would be there for the retail industry. It explicitly examines the way they see shopping from the organized retail outlets, their expectations and how the FDI has impacted retailing and whether the positive impact outweighs the negative impact of FDI or not. newline FDI means investment by a non-resident entity/person resident outside India as per schedule 1 of Foreign Exchange Management . There have been many changes in the government stance in relation to the FDI policy in retail. This has majorly impacted the sector and since then it has been the crux of discussions in the elite circles of academia and industry. More saliently, the recent FDI policy envisages investment in single brand retail permissible up to 100% where, any venture made via automatic route and through government route is 49% permitted. Besides, FDI in Multi Brand retailing is allowed only up to 51% which can be done only through Government route, according to DIPP policy, subject to certain conditions. The consumer is altogether exposed to a new array of shopping experiences with wider international and national brands, ambience, services and promotions so as to drive them to their stores. More saliently, the lack of such a study from consumer s perspective also plugs in the lacuna in the research arena in a major way.
