pediatric cochlear implantation outcome measurement from parents perspectives

Abstract

PEDIATRIC COCHLEAR IMPLANTATION: OUTCOME MEASUREMENT FROM PARENTS PERSPECTIVES newlineIntroduction: Cochlear implant (CI) is one of the preferred technological rehabilitation strategies for promoting oral language, speech perception and production, psychosocial well-being and educational development in children with deafness. Parental perspective questionnaire (PPQ) assesses various psychosocial domains specific to the effects of the CI such as communication, physical function, self-confidence, and well-being and happiness of the child in real life situations. The PPQ developed by Archbold et al. The Children with Cochlear Implants: Parental Perspectives (CCIPP) which was later validated as Parental Views and Experiences from Cochlear Implantation Questionnaire (PVECIQ) and tested for reliability by O Neill et al. is a most widely used instrument to assess the outcome from children with CI. However, PVECIQ is not available in Hindi. Therefore, there is a need to develop linguistically and culturally sensitive PPQ to measure the pediatric cochlear implantation (PCI) outcomes from parental perspectives. newlineAim and Objectives: To translate and culturally adapt Parents views and experiences with pediatric cochlear implant questionnaire (PVECIQ) into Hindi language and culture; and to determine the validity and reliability of the translated questionnaire to measure the outcome from pediatric cochlear implantation. newlineMethodology: The original PVECIQ was translated into Hindi using forward-backward translation techniques. The content face and construct validity of the Hindi translated questionnaire were determined to generate final PEPCIQ Hindi version containing 74 items covering two domains: decision-making (26 items) and the outcomes of implantation (48 items). The questionnaire was content, face and construct validated. The internal reliability was determined by Cronbach s alpha and ICC index and external reliability was calculated by test-retest results of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was piloted on 239 parents t
