Abstract
An industrial revolution due to increased human activities from the past few decades had a
newlinemixed impact on human life, but a negative impact on the environment. Manmade activities
newlinecontribute huge greenhouse gas emissions, causing an imbalance in nature. Among several
newlinesources, landfilling is considered the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) and ODOR
newlineemissions, perhaps affecting the environment and posing health risks on human lives
newlineinhabited at the proximity of the landfill sites. Hence, effective monitoring of landfill gas
newlineand ODOR emissions at each site of waste disposal must be a vital aspect of solid waste
newlinemanagement strategies.
newlineIn this research work, we proposed an intelligent sensing platform, for monitoring, and
newlinealerting GHG, and ODOR emissions from the municipal solid waste (MSW) dumpsite
newlineNetaji Road, Kuppam (A.P), situated close to residential zones. The platform integrates
newlineautonomous sensing nodes for greenhouse gas, ODOR, and Smart Bins monitoring, IoT
newlineCloud for secure storage and remote access, and a user-friendly mobile application for realtime
newlineassessment, monitoring, and alerting the users.
newlineFirstly, we proposed to build an autonomous sensing node, for monitoring greenhouse gas
newlineemissions, from the MSW landfill site. The sensing nodes are solar-powered, portable, and
newlinecustomized by incorporating industrial sensors such as carbon dioxide, methane, and
newlinecarbon monoxide sensors for measuring landfill gas emissions at the MSW dumping site
newlineand extended up to 500 meters from the site. Initially, conducted a health survey based on
newlinesimple questionnaires to assess the health issues associated with gas exposure on residents
newlineliving at the proximity of the MSW site, before conducting real-time field measurements
newlineof landfill gas emissions. Preceding the health survey, conducted a real-time field
newlinemeasurement on emission concentration of greenhouse gases at the MSW site out from
newlineJune-November 2018 for 6 months. The field measurement started at the dumpsite, 100 m,
newline300 m, and 500 m surrounding the dumpsite. The stud
