dc.description.abstractThe institution of marriage has remained as a subject of critical engagement, newlineenquiry and examination across time and space. Theorists, critics and scholars alike newlinehave engaged with the problematics of marriage. Similarly, various literary writers newlinehave also acknowledged and expressed their views on the problems arising from newlineunequal gender relations. The ancient art form of theatre and drama has incorporated newlineit to represent society and highlight various social problems. It can be observed as a newlineconstantly dominant subject from Greek to post-modern drama. Various dramatists newlinehave presented comedies, social realities and tragedies on the subject. Further, they newlinehave dealt with diverse themes such as inheritance, sexuality, desire, body politics, newlineidentity, gender power relations, violence, exploitation, subjugation, agency and newlineautonomy among others in the context of women. newlineMale and female playwrights have deeply engaged with the institution of newlinemarriage to explore, understand, challenge and critique gender politics. Many of them newlinehave explored the problematic aspects of relationships from the point-of-view of newlinewomen. They approach the subject from diverse perspectives which is reflected in the newlinestructure, motifs, characterisation and dialougues of their works. Therefore, it is newlineimportant to understand the perspective of such playwrights. newlineThe present research, titled Engaging with the Institution of Marriage: A newlineCritical Study of Select Plays by Indian Women Playwrights, examines six plays newlinewhich are either originally written or translated into English by six different Indian newlinewomen playwrights.
