Abstract
Diabetes is a non-communicable metabolic disorder which affects large population worldwide. It is result of abnormalities in insulin release, insulin sensitivity or both. Disturbance in insulin sensitivity or release results in hyperglycemic conditions and metabolism. If this hyperglycemic condition remains untreated for long time, it affects important organs such as kidney, heart, eye and nerves causing micro and macro-vascular complications. The nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-and#954;and#946;) plays key role in the development of vascular complications of diabetes. Persistent hyperglycemia, increased oxidative stress and advanced glycation end products initiate chronic low grade inflammation which increases NF-and expression. NF-and in response activates pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and cell adhesion molecules leading to vascular damage. Inhibition of NF-and#954;and#946; pro-inflammatory pathway can be targeted for management of vascular complications of diabetes. Various natural and synthetic inhibitors of NF-and have been studied in management of diabetic complications.
