Decentralised Control and Operation of Limited Area Electricity Distribution Networks Using Transactive Methodologies

Abstract

Electricity distribution networks have evolved into networks with newlinebidirectional power flows as more Distributed Energy Resources are added and there newlineis a pressing need for autonomous control mechanisms for grid operation, control and newlineenergy management. Two distributed control methods that can be considered hybrid newlinetransactive energy methods are proposed. While Frequency Deviation Pricing newlineControl uses frequency deviation under power unbalance to generate pricing signals, newlineVoltage Deviation Pricing Control relates voltage deviation at nodes to power flows newlineand generates price signals. Verification of the frequency deviation pricing method is newlineperformed using lumped parameter equivalent model while that of the voltage newlinedeviation pricing control method is done using a Microgrid model. To validate the newlinenetwork entity responses to the proposed control methods, an Agent Based Model of newlinea limited area electric distribution network is built and simulations done. Network newlinemanagement under these methods need fast and simple reliability evaluation of newlinesystems as well as the network and two new methods are developed. Proposed newlineExtended - Layer of Protection Analysis method for system availability estimation is newlinevalidated using a residential PV system. The Power flow Dependent Voltage Stability newlineIndex derived method for reliability assessment of networks is validated using IEEE 69-bus test network. As selection of tariff design plays a key role in implementing newlinesuch control methods in transitioning networks, a new multi-criteria tariff design newlineselection framework using Analytic Network Process is proposed and validated. For newlinereal world implementation, a multi-component, time of use tariff design with a newlinetransactive energy component contributed by the deviation pricing mechanism is newlinefound to be the most appropriate utility-network entity interface. newline
