Performance and Problems of State Road Transport Undertakings An Analysis of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation of Punjab and Haryana Roadways of Haryana

Abstract

The present century revolution in transport has made us aware of the relationship of immobility with poverty with transport innovations influencing most profoundly the pace and growth of economic development. Public Transport amenity is crucial for reducing and controlling poverty in rural areas. The philosophy that wide roads can solve problems is no longer in vogue as it is well recognized now although much road space is provided, the growth in vehicular traffic will soon overwhelm it, and the increase in usage of private transport leads to inefficient utilization of resources and is not sustainable both from the depleting energy situation as well as traffic congestion, road accidents, pollution and its effects on public health. Therefore, major policy initiatives towards increasing public transport share in trips of every country in the world have been funneling serious resource issues into the public transportation systems to ensure that these are adequate, comfortable, and maintained at the top class level. In a developing country, India, around 30 percent of the total population survives below the poverty line. As per the National Transport Development Policy Committee, road transport carries about 90 percent of the total passenger traffic and 67 percent of freight traffic. Road transport alone accounted for about more than 64 percent share of the total transport sector contribution to GVA followed by Railways. Certain inherent characteristics of the Bus transport system make it the ideal mode for meeting the huge and increasing demand for passenger transport services. newline newlineThe present study is a modest attempt to analyze the personnel policies, growth, and profitability portion of SRTUs, to assess the service quality of SRTUs, to assess the satisfaction level of commuters and employees of SRTUs of Haryana State Road Transport Undertaking and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation. newline
