Abstract
Fifth Generation (5G) mobile technology is an anticipated viable solution to overcome the
newlinechallenge of spectrum congestion as well as meet the requirements of high-speed networks. Free
newlinespace optical (FSO) communication technology has established a reputation for itself as nextgeneration
newline
newlinenetwork capable of delivering high-speed data access to end-users. In light of the
newlineupcoming launch of 5G services in various countries, FSO links can play an excellent role in
newlinerealizing the benefits of 5G technology.
newlineIndia is a developing country and has a huge scope of futuristic technologies like 5G mobile
newlinenetworks and IoT-enabled connectivity of various devices. The users of smart devices and need of
newlinehigh-speed connectivity is increasing exponentially in India and the existing networks, based on
newlineRF and microwave links are not capable enough to meet the current and future bandwidth
newlinerequirements of enormous bandwidth and high data rates. Although optical fiber communication is
newlineone of the viable solutions for this problem, high installation time and expensive cost of laying
newlinedown optical fiber network are some of its key limitations. On the other hand, as a result of digital
newlineIndia program, the major cities of India will be transformed into smart cities driven by IoT, 5G,
newlineand future generation wireless mobile networks. To cater to the needs of high data rates and the
newlinehuge bandwidth required by 5G and IoT technology-enabled smart city infrastructure in India, the
newlineFSO communication links can be incorporated into the existing network infrastructure to provide
newlineseamless connectivity to the users.
