Abstract
Management of multi-surfaced decayed primary teeth served to be challenging until the
newlineintroduction of stainless steel crowns by Humphrey in 1950. Since then, the Stainless
newlinesteel crowns served as the choice of treating primary teeth with multi-surface carious lesions. Though the stainless steel crowns outperformed the other restorative materials in
newlineterms of cost, durability and longevity, the metallic appearance of the stainless steel
newlinecrowns remained as the focal area of concern for both the parents and the children. The
newlinepersistent increase in the demand for an alternate cost-effective aesthetic crown for primary tooth instigated Fiber re-inforced glass crowns - The FIGARO Crowns for primary
newlineteeth.
newlineA systematic review was done to evaluate the clinical success rates of various preformed
newlineaesthetic crowns for primary teeth and it declared Figaro crowns to be a promising and
newlinecost effective replacement to Stainless steel crowns. After which, various studies were
newlinedone with Figaro crowns on evaluating the different factors such as the gingival health,
newlineretention rate, marginal leakage, marginal adaptation and discrepancy which influences
newlineits success for use in primary teeth.
newlineOn comparing Figaro crowns with Stainless steel crowns, no statistically significant difference was noted in the degree of marginal leakage and the retention rate. Also, the Figaro
newlinecrowns had good marginal adaptation and showed minimal marginal discrepancy in primary teeth. With regards to the acceptance of the Figaro crowns, both the parents and
newlinethe children preferred Figaro crowns to Stainless steel crowns. Furthermore, the Figaro
newlinecrowns showed decreased adhesion of S.mutans over a period of time when compared
newlinewith stainless steel crowns. Considering all the above results, Figaro crowns proves to be
newlinea reliable aesthetic replacement to stainless steel crowns.
