Abstract
The growing population in the globe and the increasing standards of living have increased the demand for electricity. The increase in the use of fossil fuels for the generation of electricity has added to global warming. The excess carbon footprint needs to be reduced drastically to reduce the impact of climate change. There is a need to shift to greener energy resources and reduce fossil fuel usage to the maximum possible. Understanding the energy demand of the population as a whole and meeting the demand using renewable energy resources will help in reducing the carbon footprint to a reasonable extent.
newlineIntegrating the state the art technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Fog/Edge computing, Cloud computing, and 4G/5G into the electrical grid system will aid in improving the monitoring and controlling of the power distribution system. The existing grid can be made smarter when the two-way communication between the consumers and Utilities can be established and the communication technologies can bring this to reality. Thus, consumers can get involved in Demand Side Management (DSM)
