Abstract
ABSTRACT
newlineRecent years have witnessed extensive studies on the exploration and development of the
newlineMetal Matrix Composites (MMCs) and their low-cost processing methodologies so as to
newlineaccommodate the deficiencies of the pure metals and their alloys and to overcome the need
newlinefor high-performance and lightweight materials in the automotive and aerospace industries.
newlineMagnesium (Mg) MMCs appeared to be the good alternative for Mg alloys as advanced
newlinestructural materials. Several studies have been conducted so far to examine the effect of
newlinedifferent reinforcements (single type) and processing methods on Mg MMCs. The results
newlinerevealed that the addition of ceramic reinforcements with good strength (Alumina (Al2O3)
newlineor Silicon Carbide (SiC)) can yield excellent high-temperature properties to Mg-based materials.
newlineEven though Mg MMCs with ceramic reinforcements exhibit good mechanical and tribological
newlineproperties, reinforcement-matrix interface reaction and interfacial de-cohesion can
newlinecause Mg MMCs to experience a substantial reduction in ductility and fracture toughness.
newlineSo, it is indeed essential to develop new and advanced composites through cost-effective fabrication
newlinemethod to address these issues. Latest research efforts suggested that simultaneous
newlineaddition of two or more reinforcements had to play a crucial role in the future performance
newlineof Mg MMCs. On this ground, new Mg-based hybrid composites are developed in this study
newlineusing micro and nano Al2O3 reinforcements.
newlineIn this research work, prior to the composite fabrication, a novel quaternary Mg alloy
newline(Mg-3Zn-0.7Zr-1Cu) was prepared. Later, micro and hybrid Al2O3 based composites were
newlineprepared by reinforcing Mg-3Zn-0.7Zr-1Cu alloy with micro and nano Al2O3 particulates.
newlineBlend-press-sinter based Powder Metallurgy (PM) technique followed by hot extrusion was
newlineused as the fabrication technique in this study and two different sintering temperatures were
newlineused during PM process so as to investigate its impact on the behaviour of the Mg materials..
