Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruption to higher education, compelling an
newlineabrupt transition from classroom-based learning to digital platforms. In West Bengal, this shift
newlinehighlighted challenges of accessibility, digital literacy, and institutional preparedness. This
newlinestudy explores how digital education influenced postgraduate students academic engagement,
newlineemotional well-being, and perceptions of future learning modes.
newlineThe research aims to examine the effectiveness of digital education in maintaining academic
newlinecontinuity during the pandemic, identify challenges faced by students, and assess their
newlinepreferences for online, offline, or blended learning in the post-pandemic context.
newlineA mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating descriptive statistics with
newlinephenomenological inquiry. Primary data were collected from 410 postgraduate students across
newlineselected colleges in Kolkata and South 24 Parganas through surveys and semi-structured
newlineinterviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods, while
newlinequalitative responses underwent thematic analysis to capture students lived experiences.
newlineFindings indicate that while digital education ensured continuity, it was hindered by unequal
newlineaccess to devices, unstable internet connectivity, and economic constraints. Students reported
newlinedecreased engagement due to limited peer interaction, digital fatigue, and lack of hands-on
newlinelearning. Emotional challenges such as anxiety, stress, and isolation were more pronounced
newlineamong those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. Despite these drawbacks,
newlineparticipants acknowledged the flexibility, accessibility, and resource-rich nature of online
newlinelearning. Post-pandemic, many advocated for a blended model that combines the convenience
newlineof digital platforms with the interactive benefits of face-to-face learning.
